Sony X-Series Walkman Teardown

When I saw a recent post on ABI by ultrapony about a teardown of the X-Series, I decided to post a few more photos I found online.

As ultrapony points out, the wireless chip in the X-Series lacks Bluetooth support meaning there was no chance of a firmware update for Bluetooth support. In addition the photos show that the X-Series uses a Samsung OLED display. Images are courtesy of here.

Update – March 2026

I decided to update this post with some more photos and context. Click here to download the service manual.

First remove the screws on the bottom near the port. These 2 screws attach to a metal plate on the inside.

To remove the back panel, you will need a suction cup. Attach the suction cup to the back and slowly lift the panel. If the panel will not lift, you can try and run a plastic pick around the edge to try and lift the panel up. See this video.

Here is a photo of the back panel removed. The metal shield should be affixed to the back panel. If it is not, you should be able to just lift it up.

Next remove the hold button. The button is attached with 2 screws

Next, disconnect the 2 ribbon cables, one at the top for the 3,5mm port, and the other on the bottom which is for the flex PCB with the controls. There should be a little latch which raises up.

With the bottom part of the player facing towards you, lift the left edge of the PCB and battery to reach the flex cable on the back. Disconnect the cable.
