Sony to Introduce New Signature Series Headphones and DAC

Sony will be holding a press conference in Hong Kong on August 9th and 10th to showcase the next chapter in their signature series line which debuted in 2016.  We are looking at a few devices here, a new high end headset, the MDR-Z7M2, a super high end DAC, DMP-Z1, and 3 in ear headphones, IER-M7, IER-M9 and IER-Z1R.

The rumoured pricing of the DAC is around 60,000 RMB, or 7,500 Euros.  The least expensive should be the IER-M7 but I would not expect anything under 300 Euros here.  I would imagine we will see these at IFA but no sure availability will be everywhere around the world and will be market specific. Also I am not sure if I will be able to update the site with the relevant info once Sony make it available right away.

The new products will be showcased on the 9th of August at 16:30 local time.

Here are the times for other areas (all times in 24H):

  • Tokyo – Aug 9th – 17:30
  • Berlin – Aug 9th – 10:30
  • London – Aug 9th – 9:30
  • New York – Aug 9th – 4:30
  • LA – Aug 9th – 1:30

Sony to Introduce New Signature Series Headphones and DAC

1. In August 2018, Sony will launch its new Signature series products at HKAVSHOW 2018 in Hong Kong, including new portable music players and headphones: the new Signature series siblings: IER-Z1R and DMP-Z1, Sony’s in-ear stage monitoring headphone series: IER-M7 and IER-M9, and the upgraded headphone—MDR-Z7M2 (an upgraded version of MDR-Z7)!

New siblings to the Signature Pure Sound series: IER-Z1R and DMP-Z1

The new Signature series’ new sibling products, the IER-Z1R and DMP-Z1, enhance the high-definition sound quality experience, elevating listening to a deeper level of sensory experience, and providing audiophiles with a better music experience.

DMP-Z1 Product Concept: Suitable for indoor use, such as in homes, cafes, and hotels. Sit down and enjoy listening to music; place the player on your desk or side table.

The IER-Z1R product philosophy is to deliver outstanding 100kHz performance in the in-ear field, with a core focus on sound quality and user experience.

2. Sony In-Ear Stage Monitor Headphones Series: IER-M7 and IER-M9

Providing optimal tonal balance and absolute noise isolation for stage monitoring, it also offers a stable wearing experience, preventing the embarrassment of headphones falling out during performances. This is a music experience tailored by Sony for professionals and audiophiles. The IER-M7 is Sony’s first in-ear stage monitoring headphone, while the IER-M9 is a high-end, advanced version. Featuring a newly developed Balanced Armature (BA) driver and linear original sound reproduction system, it delivers exceptional sound effects and extremely precise audio performance.

Similarities between M7 and M9:

Drive unit structure: A T-shaped armature replaces the U-shaped armature to achieve low distortion and return without compromising sound quality.

The use of audio-grade film capacitors specifically designed for cross-network circuits enables the delivery of refined sound with low distortion.

Optimized shell material and shape for a lightweight, comfortable, and stable fit.

Upgrades of M9:

M7 is a quadruple balanced armature drive unit, and M9 is a quintuple drive armature unit.

The M9’s casing is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy, while the M7’s is made of resin.

The newly developed IER-M9 super tweeter employs a high-rigidity and high-dissipation magnesium alloy diaphragm, gold-plated terminals, and a silver-plated copper voice coil to enhance the super tweeter’s driving force. These cables, used in symphonic music, faithfully reproduce the original sound without losing even the slightest trace of subtle signals, ensuring low distortion while delivering rich and clear sound.

The IER-M9 employs a molded waveguide as the sound path to the ear. This waveguide achieves an ideal frequency response through a short and wide sound path, thus suppressing spike resonance.

3. Upgraded Headphones – MDR-Z7M2 (Upgraded version of MDR-Z7)

This entry-level model in the world of high-quality audio inherits the “Sony Sound Effect” technology from the Z1R, supports high-resolution audio playback, and features a new 70mm HD driver unit with a Fibonacci spiral grid and an aluminum-plated liquid crystal polymer diaphragm. It also includes a 3.0m silver-plated OFC cable with a gold-plated stereo mini plug, as well as a 1.2m silver-plated OFC cable with a gold-plated balanced standard plug, and of course, a gold-plated adapter.
