Sony on their PlayStation Blog outlined the new price increases for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player. The price increase will be effective starting April 2nd. Obviously Sony opted for April 2nd, because not one would believe a price increase for April 1st.

The normal trend for most consoles is that over the life cycle, the price usually goes down, but we are in bizarro land, and pricing is going up, way up. This is not the first price increase for the PS5, with Sony first increasing the price in August 2022 thanks to higher inflation costs. Initially the US was spared this initial price increase, but reality caught up, and the US received their first price increase in August 2025.

The new price increase in April 2026 is quite staggering, with a $200 price increase in the US for the PS5 digital edition and PS5 Pro. Japan does seem to be affected even more so, with pricing much, much higher than when they console launched. I suspect the weaker Yen may also be a factor here. When the console launched in November 2020, the Yen/USD rate was 104, and today it is 160ish.

So what is the cause of the new price increase? Simple, AI. Component costs are rapidly rising thanks to various AI companies buying up RAM, storage and CPUs. If the AI trend continues, then this will not be the last price increase we will see. The AI bubble needs to pop, and it needs to pop quickly, otherwise smartphones, consoles and computers will become way more expensive than what consumers are prepared to pay.

The comments on the PS blog are something, here are a few examples. Definitely check out the blog post for the rest.

Price increases will not be limited to consoles, the upcoming Xperia models will also be affected, and very likely the upcoming NW-ZX900 Walkman. So buckle up folks, things will get worse, before they get better.
