Sony LinkBuds Fit and Open Firmware Update Version 1.5.1
Sony has released a firmware update for the Sony LinkBuds Fit and Open earbuds, now version 1.5.1.
Here are the changes:
- Enhances system software security features
- Improves other function
I am guessing this update fixes any of the newer Airoha/Mediatek Bluetooth chip vulnerabilities, as the previous firmware update(s) already addressed the system security for past vulnerabilities.
Here are the previous changes included in the 1.5.1 firmware:
- Enhances system software security features
- Improves an issue where the left and right volume levels may temporarily differ when Adaptive Volume Control setting is turned on
- Improves an issue where ringtones may not be audible when connected to an iPhone
Note: If you have encountered this issue, it can be resolved by either initializing the headset or using them to make a call after the update.
- Improves other functions
- Adds support for the following features:
- Auto Switch
- Auto Play
- Google Fast Pair through LE Audio priority connection
- The new Google’s Find My Device (only during dedicated Classic Audio connection)
As with all wireless Sony headset updates, make sure to have both the earbuds and phone fully charged before attempting the update. I have had a firmware update fail on a set of earbuds when they were not fully charged.
The Fit and Open models use Sony’s V2 Bluetooth SoC, so it does makes sense for the models to share a firmware version, but I am sure they are not the same firmware, just the same version. The file sizes are different, 4.31MB (Open) and 5.52 MB (Fit). I still wonder if Sony is planning on eventually phasing out the LinkBuds Open model, in favour of the Clip model announced earlier this year. I know the Open and Clip models are very different, but they kind of occupy the same segment, open-air earbuds. What do people think, should Sony ditch the Open model for the Clip? Or keep both?
The LinkBuds line did receive a second generation, so it will be interesting if the line continues over the next few years. Sony did have the h.ear on line, but that was eventually discontinued. The Extra Bass line did evolve into the ULT line, but I think the original Extra Bass branding was superior.
