Sony YY2998 Certified on the FCC

The mysterious YY2998 has been certified on the FCC. We already knew the headset came with noise cancellation thanks to the Indonesian certification, but the FCC filing finally confirms it is an over-ear model. My best guess is this is the new WH-CH730N, assuming Sony keeps the 700 series naming scheme.

The label diagram is just a general placeholder image for the model, so not much is revealed here. The serial number will be under the earpad according to the filing. The current WH-CH720N has the serial number on the left side support hinge/swivel backside.

The antenna is an Inverted-F type, manufactured by Amphenol Airwave Communication Electronics Co., Ltd. Not much else is reveal in the antenna document.

The internal battery is 3.85V, with recharging via USB. The documents do not mention the type, but it will be USB-C. The software for wireless testing is “Headset_BT_Test”. The same software Sony used for the WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM6 wireless testing. So it would be safe to say we are looking at a Mediatek or Airoha Bluetooth SoC.

What SoC could Sony use? The current WH-CH720N uses the MT2822, so would Sony move to the same chip as the WH-1000XM6, MT2833? I doubt it. Sony could use an Airoha chip, perhaps the AB1571/77?

The headset has already been certified in Indonesia and China earlier this month. which revealed the noise cancellation detail. See the previous post.

The short term confidentiality date is June 22 2026. This could mean we could be looking at an April/May 2026 announcement. The WH-CH720N was announced in February 2023, so about a 3 year life cycle. This is much longer than what the mid-range usually had in the past, about 2 years.

So what could Sony improve? Well first and foremost the hinge, so it does not break. Second the noise cancellation could definitely be improved, alongside the sound quality. And finally, adding LE Audio. Apart from that, anything additional is a bonus. Hopefully Sony does not add the Auto NC Optimizer.

Update 9 – April 17

The headset has passed through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for certification. So this new collexion model should go on sale in India for those wondering. FYI the WF-1000XM6 (YY2985) has still not passed through the BIS.

Update 8 – March 27

A lot of new import filings have appeared. Unfortunately none of them reveal what model we are looking at yet. It is very strange that there are almost no leaks or details about this model. The only new information I have is the Bluetooth chipset the model will use, which will be the Mediatek MT2855. If MT2855 is a custom Airoha AB1595, then this is the top of the line chip from Mediatek. Would Sony stick such a chip into a mid-range WH-CH730N model? I do not know.

The model went through Production Validation Testing (PVT) in late September 2025 (see update 2), so I would think production has already started a while back, the latest the start of this year. As I mentioned earlier in this post, an April/May announcement seems to be in the cards.

Sony YY2998 Certified on the FCCSome of the headsets, or even parts are being imported into Japan. I do wonder if this is for testing or quality control? The import filings confirm the black and white model colours. For comparison, the WH-CH720N was initially offered in 3 colours, black, white, and blue, so if this new model is a successor to the WH-CH720N, then it will drop the blue option. But with the new Bluetooth SoC information, perhaps this is some new standalone model sitting above the WH-1000XM6? Would that even make sense? No idea.

Finally, we have a certification of the headset in Mexico. Fun fact, there is still no WF-1000XM6 (YY2985) certification in Mexico. Yet the headset is on sale there. How very strange. If anyone has any details about this model, please contact me.

A certification for the headset has appeared in South Korea. Not much new is revealed, but it does confirm that the device is made in Vietnam. I have a feeling this might be announced soon, perhaps April?
