Sony Xperia 1 VIII appears on Geekbench
Sony’s upcoming Xperia 1 VIII has made an appearance on Geekbench. We have 3 listings right now, and it is of the XQ-GE54 (PM-1520-BV) variant. This is is most likely the European model.
The benchmark already reveals what was suspected, the headset will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (SM8850). The ram configuration will remain 12 GB like the previous model.
The only other information revealed is the firmware version, 73.0.A.2.27, which is the same for all 3 benchmarks.

The benchmarks results are nothing amazing, a bit above last year’s model, but not in the range of some competitors. It looks like Sony has taken a “more in the middle” approach with the Snapdragon chip, opting for slightly reduced performance, which would help increase the battery life. If this limitation is software based, then Sony could easily up the performance with future firmware updates.
Of course, this is early unreleased firmware, so the benchmarks should improve with time.
These listings could be benchmarks for a review, if correct, then the headset is in the hands of tech sites, and being reviewed. So we should get a teaser soon.

Update
A listing on Amazon Germany, now removed, has revealed the new zoom camera details. The new zoom lens is a 48Mp 1/1.56″ sensor, with a fixed focal length of 70mm. The sensor does seem to be the same one as last year’s upgraded wide lens. The upgraded sensor is 4X larger than the one found in the Xperia 1 VII. This should improve image quality.

And google translated.

So it appears Sony has traded the optical zoom in favour a larger sensor. I suspect the zoom lens will still have digital zoom using “ai”, how effective that will be remains to be seen.
Update 1 – May 11
XQ-GE74 has appeared in the benchmark listings.
